A TERRITORY MARKED BY ITS HISTORY Cradle of many civilizations since its foundation in 565 BC by the Phocaeans (Alalia), this former Greek then Roman colony, capital of the island during Antiquity, played a strategic role in defense against external invasions. Also, the Genoese decided to build a fort there in 1484, which since 1962 has housed the Archaeological Museum. Since 1969, it has been named after the historian Jérôme Carcopino, a specialist in Ancient Rome. The archaeological site, described for the first time by Prosper Mérimée during his trip to Corsica in 1840, has been classified as a Historic Monument since 1990. The remains, such as the Forum, the Temple, the Capitol or the Balneum, are of interest to visit most interesting. The pond of Diana which sheltered the old port of war, is very well known since Antiquity for its oysters which were exported towards Rome and which the Romans were crazy about. Today, they still enjoy great renown for their taste quality.
